The Google Pixel is Simply a Cog in the Machine

The notion that the Pixel is designed to compete with the Galaxies and iPhones of the world is no more than a myth, the true objective of the product has always been data collection

The funny thing about smartphones is that they are often reflective of who they are designed for. When you saw someone using a Galaxy Note device the immediate thought was business and productivity. Companies look to craft a persona with some releases, oftentimes mirroring what the company is or sometimes what it hopes to be.

With the release of the new Pixel devices, Google has been making smartphones for 7 years now. And with every release, there is a fair share of criticisms surrounding hardware design (Pixel 3 XL notch), new software features (Pixel 4 air gestures), and curious release oddities (the non-existence of a Pixel 5 XL). Many people have bemoaned Google not being competitive over the years with Samsung. Samsung often has the more impressive screen and spec sheet, leading people to wonder why Google is still making phones. Perhaps the more appropriate takeaway is that Google is not making phones to compete with Samsung but instead a part of the larger mechanic of its business model.
