Sports Grid Games & the Simple Nostalgia of Daily Trivia
Obscure players, random team associations, and the magic that comes from recalling the past
Years ago, I made the conscious decision to uninstall mobile games from my smartphone. The reason being that I was a little too addicted to games like Fruit Ninja and Temple Run. To avoid having to charge my phone five times a day, I decided that I would quit mobile games cold turkey; they were too addictive, and I needed to take a step back. I have stayed true to that promise to myself and have not installed games on my phone since. But then there was a game that took the time-wasting aspect away and made me bend my rules slightly. That game was Wordle.
The once daily word guessing game became a favorite of mine, and since I started in 2022, it is something that has become a part of my daily routine. The success of the game has entered the sports realm as a result. Games like HoopGrids and Immaculate Grid have become regular parts of my daily phone rotation as well. These games offer something that every sports fan is familiar with: recalling random associations with team, players, and stats. These grid trivia games are an evolution of bar room sports discussions and a fun use of useless sports knowledge that all fans possess on some level.
