Netflix’s Inevitable Path to Live Sports is Upon Us
Forget binge-watching your favorite shows, Netflix is about to have you glued to the screen for a whole new reason: live sports
As time goes on, companies evolve and change. Apple, for example, was founded as a computer company. Today, its Mac line of computers are a small segment of their business compared to the iPhone, iPad, and subscription services. Another tech company that has experienced tremendous change in the way they generate revenue is Netflix. The company that started as an alternative to Blockbuster with DVDs in the mail is much different today. These days, Netflix is a movie studio in addition to a streaming service. It is even offering games in an effort to keep subscribers in the very competitive streaming video space.
Other tech companies that have entered the streaming space like Google, Apple, and Amazon have all come to realize one fact: the last frontier of streaming revenue is live sports. All of these companies have been in the mix when sports leagues began looking for new broadcasting rights deals, because live sports is one of the only things left that we as a society consume when it airs. Netflix has started to wade into this realm with a series of sports documentaries but has yet to commit to broadcasting live sports.
