Microsoft Surface Duo 2: The Dual Screen Proposition
The argument for two displays instead of folding glass
I have a confession to make. Years ago, I was something of an advocate for Windows Phone. I love using my Lumia devices from Nokia (and eventually Microsoft) and thought that the vision of mobile that Microsoft presented was compelling and made a lot of sense. I eventually saw the writing on the wall when the company was unable to attract third-party developers that the platform was inevitably doomed. When that inevitable day came I found myself disappointed that the experiment was not able to survive.
The disappointment for me stemmed from the fact that I believed in Microsoft’s vision for its mobile operating system and thought that its live tile interface was intuitive and incredibly forward-thinking. When they left I found myself wondering if they would ever return to the smartphone space. Last year they did just that with an ambitious dual-screen device called the Surface Duo. An interesting device that lacked the polish of its competition and was widely disregarded as a one-off experiment. But now the company has released a sequel with better cameras and a more up-to-date processor. And in a year filled with devices that seem to lack imagination, the Surface Duo 2 feels a bit like a breath of fresh air.
