Basketball more than other sports has an “I wish” quality to it. It is a sport that typically requires certain physical gifts to excel at. Countless people who have played the game will say that they could have been even better if they were a few inches taller or could jump a little bit higher. We see this methodology manifest itself in the way we view draft prospects as well. NBA front offices will often prioritize a player that is 19 years old and has a 7’3” wingspan who is faster and jumps higher than others. This dynamic is what makes a player that does not fit this archetype so noteworthy.

The New York Knicks season just ended in the second round to the Indiana Pacers. It was a season that was filled with grit, toughness, and a resiliency to fight through injury. By the end of their series with the Indiana Pacers, the Knicks had six players that suffered injuries that forced them to miss time in the postseason. Those injuries required bench players to take on bigger roles for the team.
