The explosion of podcasts, the decline of reading books, and the shift in the way that we consume captivating literature

I recently watched a series on Apple TV+ called WeCrashed. This was the story of the rapid rise and fall of WeWork founder and former CEO Adam Neumann. The series stars Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway as Adam Neumann and his wife Rebekah Neumann, and they deliver captivating performances as the dynamic couple. What was so fascinating about this series was what it was based on. Usually shows and movies will be based on true events that were chronicled through interviews or books. But this particular show was based on a podcast by the same name that was produced by podcast publication company Wondery.

This is not a one-off situation either. The popular podcast Dr. Death has been turned into a miniseries that is gaining some buzz on Peacock. This is a growing trend that is seeing more and more podcasts being turned into large screen adaptations. It is a statement on the world of podcasts and what it has become: the breeding ground of modern storytelling. Considering the way that we live our lives these days, is it possible that the podcast has replaced books as the primary method of telling a captivating story?
